Cumaru Hardwood Decking
Installation and Handling
Be sure to complete this checklist:
• Store out of direct sunlight and weather
• Allow material to acclimate at job site
• Use ¼" spacing for 6" boards
• Insure adequate cross ventilation under deck
• Use stainless steel fasteners
• Pre-drilling is required
• Seal end cuts with Anchor seal
• Apply a finish on all four sides
• Check local building codes for proper joist span and permitting
Handling and Storage
For best results, Cumaru Kiln Dried Decking should be stored out of direct sunlight and not exposed to the weather before installation. Once the deck material is delivered to the jobsite it should be kept off the ground and out of the weather. Although Cumaru is a Kiln Dried product, it should be allowed to equalize to the ambient moisture at the job sight.
Material Application
Spacing: 6" wide decking should be installed with a ¼" space between the boards. This space will allow for air-circulation and allow for expansion and contraction. There is almost no shrinkage or expansion on decking lengthwise so trimmed ends can be butted together.
Span: Consult your local building codes for local regulations. Generally, 1" x 6" decking can be installed with joist 16" on center. 5/4" x 6" decking can be installed 24" on center.
Ventilation: All jobsite conditions are different, deck should be built to allow adequate air circulation to prevent cupping/warping and excessive expansion/shrinkage.

Equipment
Carbide tipped saw blades and high speed drill and drill bits are recommend for cutting decking material. Routing and planning can be done with high speed steel or carbide cutters. Material should be cut and drilled slowly.
Fasteners: It is recommended that stainless steel fasteners be used. Non stainless fasteners may cause discoloration near the screw head. Cumaru density requires pre-drilling a pilot hole on the face of the deck. Hidden fastener systems are also available. See manufacturers’ instructions for application.
End Sealer: Apply an aqueous wax (anchor seal) to the ends of the board after cuts to prevent cupping and severe checking.
Safety
Safety glasses and a dust mask should always be worn when working with hardwood lumber. Some people may have an allergic reaction to hardwood dust. Remove splinters immediately to prevent infection.
Finishing Options
Although applying a stain and finish are optional, it is highly recommended to prevent excessive checking. In order to maintain the natural color of Cumaru use a high quality penetrating oil finish with UV inhibitors. Re-apply as necessary to maintain desired look. Generally, finishes should be applied on all four sides. See manufacturers’ instructions for application.
If left unfinished Cumaru will naturally fade to a silver patina.

Disclaimer
Our Cumaru decking products are carefully manufactured and inspected to ensure the highest quality. However, as a natural wood product it is subject to variations in color, grain and performance. |
|
Wood decking is subject to dimensional changes as the moisture content in the wood changes with humidity in the air. Swelling, shrinkage, checking and other movement are normal occurrences in wood decking.
